Tips on Applying Makeup for Commercial Headshots

Written by Cosmix School of Makeup Artistry

Makeup for a commercial headshot is completely different than makeup for other types of headshots, such as theatrical and glamour headshots. A commercial headshot should be an accurate, clear photograph of an individual, a realistic image that allows the casting directors, producers and agents to quickly identify the individual. This means that the makeup must be natural and casual, but heavy enough to show up on camera. Makeup for commercial headshots should also enhance an individual’s best features. Not sure where to start? Here are a few tips on how to apply makeup for commercial headshots.

Casual is Key

Unlike a theatrical or glamour headshot, a commercial headshot features the actor in casual attire such as jeans and a t-shirt. The goal is to capture the person the way they look in real life as opposed to how they might look for a formal event. Hair is also casual, usually straightened or curled in natural-looking waves. Start with a perfect foundation according to the individual’s skin type and age. To create a casual look, ditch the heavy eyeliner and bright red lipstick for a more natural look. Instead, go for soft pinks and corals, including light lipstick, soft eye shadow, and natural-looking blush.

Correct Imperfections

Although a commercial headshot should be an accurate image of the individual, it doesn’t mean that you can’t use your tricks to correct imperfections. In fact, it’s imperative that you do. One of the talents of a successful makeup artist is the ability to correct imperfections without making an individual look different or like a clown.

While you won’t need the tricks you learned in special FX makeup school, you will need to know how to correct common imperfections such as how to hide blemishes and correct uneven lips, droopy eyes, and under eye pouches. But don’t go overboard. You can minimize the look of a crooked nose, for example, but don’t make it look to perfect because the final image will not accurately represent the individual.

Enhance Unique Features

Does the actor or model have exceptionally blue eyes? Maybe they have a unique-looking nose or sculpted cheek bones? Many entertainers set themselves apart from the rest of the pack by enhancing and promoting a unique feature. The best makeup artists that graduated from the top makeup schools in Florida and around the nation know how to enhance these unique features using the tricks of the trade.
