Before you think acupuncture is a universally accepted profession, you should know that there are tight regulations on the practice of acupuncture throughout the United States. There are only about a handful of states that have legislation about acupuncture. To be able to practice acupuncture, one needs to acquire Acupuncture certification from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine or the NCCAOM. Moreover, a Degree in Healthcare administration is not necessary for you to be able to practice acupuncture. However, to be able to practice acupuncture, you will still need to study in an accredited acupuncture college. This usually takes about three to four years, and you are definitely going to have to work for it. Acupuncture is no walk in the park. And especially because you’re dealing with someone’s health, this is carefully looked at as well. The advantage of being a professional acupuncturist is that the law protects you since you are recognized as a medical practitioner engaged in acupuncture.

With this privilege, an acupuncturist is also made accountable for his actions where he can be liable for negligence or malpractice that comes as a necessary consequence for any privilege granted to these individual by legislative action. Besides having your degree and certification, it’s also ideal to speak to practicing acupuncturists to get a perspective on what it takes to build up your own practice and what you need to do in order to make it successful. Factors that you also need to consider are time, money and location of your practice.
