The Learner's Workshop

Learner's Workshop programs offer supportive small-group learning environments for students to keep up, catch up, or get ahead in school. Small groups work very well for teaching and learning math. They also are extremely effective tools for helping kids and teens learn about themselves and others. Students enjoy learning through observation, discussion and group problem-solving. Most important, students learn that working hard at math can be fun.

Current programs and services.

The Fall, 2008 Learner's Workshop programs include Algebra Learner's Workshop and Math Learner's Workshop. Each program builds students' math skills and knowledge but also shows them how to learn mathematics. Every session includes time for individual work and small-group problem-solving. Diagnostic tests given before the first meeting identify areas of individual weakness and strength. During individual time, students receive one-to-one tutoring or build fluency in skills that need attention. In small groups, students explore new concepts and tackle problems they find interesting or challenging.

Algebra Learner's Workshop

The Algebra Learner's Workshop is designed for students who work hard, and want to do well, but have difficulty keeping up with algebra class. In this workshop, students learn to make sense of the sometimes confusing 'language' of algebra. We teach the concepts and skills that frequently trouble algebra students, but we do more than guide students to better grades: we show them how to become solid, confident math students.

Math Learner's Workshop

The Math Learner's Workshop program is designed for upper-elementary, middle-school or junior high school students who need extra support and attention in math. In the Math Learner's Workshop even more attention is given to showing students how to learn math. Students set and work toward individual learning goals, and learn effective ways to prepare and take tests and quizzes.
